What is Scar Remodeling?
Scar Remodeling is a NON-SURGICAL treatment done on a scar to alter the appearance of the scar. The revision may improve the cosmetic appearance and texture of the scar and prepare the area for camouflage tattooing if desired. It is important to remember that scars cannot be completely removed.
What is a Scar?
A scar is the body's natural way of healing and replacing lost or damaged skin. A scar is usually composed of fibrous tissue. Scars may be formed for many different reasons, including as a result of infections, surgery, injuries, or inflammation of tissue. Scars may appear anywhere on the body, and the composition of a scar may vary--appearing flat, lumpy, sunken, or colored. The final look of a scar depends on many factors, including the skin type and location on the body, the direction of the wound, the type of injury, age of the person with the scar, and his or her nutritional status. Scars can be a reminder of trauma that people want to forget.
What types of Scars can be Remodeled?
Surgical Scars, acne, self-harm scars and stretch marks are the most common scars for remodeling.
What types of Scars CANNOT be Remodeled?
Hypertrophic, keloid, contracture, or any scars less than 1 year old cannot be remodeled. Hypertrophic, keloid and contracture scars are best treated by a physician or plastic surgeon specializing is this type of treatment.
What is the process?
The Scar Remodeling process is very similiar to skin needling. When the body is healing from a wound, it produces collagen to pull the torn or cut areas of the skin back together as quickly as possible, resulting in lumpy, disorganized and often discolored scars. The Scar Remodling treatment is a controlled wounding process that creates microchannels in the scarring, breaking down old collagen and allowing the body’s natural healing process to take place in an organized fashion; knitting together the injury in an orderly fashion and creating new, smoother collagen. A rotary device is used with a topical “glide” serum over the scar to breakdown disorganized collagen created by the body’s healing process. No chemicals, serums (other than the “glide” serum), or pigments are used in this process.
Who is a good candidate?
If your scarring is at least a year old and you are in good health, you could be a good candidate for this treatment. This can be done on all skin types, although some skin types may respond better than others.
